The Bazaruto archipelago of islands off the Mozambique coast has it all. One can relax on endless white beaches, swim in the crystal waters, sail a traditional dhow or explore the diverse, colorful marine life along the reefs

Located just off the mainland of Mozambique, about 750km north of Maputo are the islands of Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque and Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) making up the Bazaruto Archipelago.

The archipelago was separated from the mainland some 10,000 years ago, and natural inhabitants include freshwater crocodiles, samango monkeys, 11 mammal species, 40 butterfly species, numerous birds and 200 offshore fish species. These animals are found in diverse habitats such as mangroves, grassland, forested dunes and freshwater lakes.

Accessibility to these islands from the mainland of Vilanculos is by boat (traditional dhows or speedboat) or by seaplane. There are a wide variety of activities that are offered at the island lodges. Diving on the many stunning reefs is optional, while sailing safaris to outlying reefs or islands on a catamaran or hobie-cat, windsurfer or paddle ski for a shorter excursion are also possible. There is also water-skiing and paragliding.

PRECAUTIONS

Malaria area - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents (containing Diethyltoluamide DEET) on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity. Currently, the three effective anti-malaria tablets are Mefloquine (Lariam or Mefliam), Doxycycline and Malarone (Malanil). It is still possible to contract malaria while on malaria prophylaxis. Note that Lariam may present serious side-effects. One is advised to take a laboratory test before he or she departs.
